Voting Opens for ‘Faces of Transportation' Contest

Online voting is now underway to decide the People's Choice Award winner in the annual Faces of Transportation photography and video contest sponsored by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials.

One of 96 photographic images will be voted the People's Choice Award winner and a panel of judges will select the winner of the "Best Overall" photograph – with each winner receiving a $500 cash prize.

This year, AASHTO chose four songs to illustrate the "themes" of the contest categories – highways, waterways, public t072718faces.jpgransit, and aviation. The photos are intended to help showcase the many ways transportation benefits both individuals and communities.

The association explained that "Highway Song," a Southern rock favorite by Blackfoot, aimed to inspire images of the open road, while the 1979 pop classic "Sailing," by Christopher Cross, sought to evoke the freedom offered by the water.

By contrast, "The Subway Song," by The Icarus Account, meant to inspire images about the human connections that public transit networks can help forge. Lastly, the 2007 chart-topping country hit "Watching Airplanes," by Gary Allan, aimed to cultivate a sense of wonder and amazement in the capability of the nation's aviation industry.

In the competition's video section, the first place winner will receive $150, with second place getting $100 and third place $50.

All of the winners will be announced August 17 at the Faces of Transportation website: www.facesoftransportation.org.
